He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Matthew 16:15 ESV
In the preceding verses, the Lord had just asked His disciples who people thought He was. They gave various answers, such as John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets. Then Jesus made the question personal: "Who do you say I am?" The verse emphasizes that faith in Christ is a personal response, not merely an opinion inherited from others.
In the next verses, Simon Peter answered: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”Matthew 16:16-18 ESV)
Beloved, Who is Jesus to you? We can easily give a general answer that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. But a personal revelational knowledge of who Jesus is to us, is the rock we can build our lives and the gate of hell will not prevail. Daniel 11:32 NKJV says, “the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” Hosea 4:6 NKJV says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”
No wonder Psalm 82:5-6 ESV says, They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you;”
Notice that Jesus said to Peter, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven” I Corinthians 12:3 NKJV
says that, “no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” This is why we must fellowship with the Holy Spirit so He can reveal Jesus to us.
Do not settle for the answer of the crowd. Do not build your faith merely on someone else’s revelation. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ to you more deeply.
WHO IS JESUS TO YOU?
WE PRAY FOR THE GRACE TO GROW IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST TO THE GLORY OF GOD THE FATHER IN JESUS NAME AMEN!
THANK YOU JESUS!
