WHOSE AUTHORITY ARE YOU ACTING ON
By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?
Matthew 21:23 NIV
The Jewish authorities wanted to know the source of Jesus’ authority. The Lord had already made it clear to the apostles in John 14:10 NIV, “The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.”
Jesus operated under the authority of the Father’s Word. And so should we. When we speak in agreement with God’s Word, we are not speaking from our own authority—we are standing in the authority of the One who sent us, Jesus, and He carries it out. In John 14:14 NIV, He said, “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
The Spirit of Jesus in us carries out the words of God we speak through the ministry of the angels. Psalms 103:20 NIV says, “Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.”
The centurion recognized that authority operates through a chain of command: ““..But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”” (Matthew 8:8-9 NIV)
Beloved, whose authority are you acting on?
Are you speaking from your own authority—or standing firmly on the authority of Jesus and His Word?
